Stage 3 – (Onshore Test Centre based)

Book via email to training@afst.uk.com

Stage 3 requires each individual to complete a formal assessment of their job knowledge, skills and ability in each Small Bore Tubing subject. The ECITB technical competence validation tests are standards based consisting of a bank of online knowledge questions and a practical task to validate the learner’s skills, knowledge and ability. The online knowledge test must be conducted as a closed book test; the candidate is not allowed to use handouts or reference materials in this part of the test. The candidate will be given access to reference materials for the practical element of the test. Successful candidates attain the ECITB certificate of achievement which is valid for a period of 3 years. Unsuccessful candidates must wait a minimum period of 4 weeks between the unsuccessful test session and next test session to allow for a period of training to address any skills or knowledge gaps.

The Test Centre must confirm the following information with the employer/candidate before arranging the test session:

Newly Trained Workers

The Test Centre must ensure the newly trained worker has successfully completed Stages 1 and 2. A record of the Approved Course certificate serial number will be recorded on the completed Work Based Task Assignment. The completed Work Based Task Assignment will be stored along with the completed paper Examiner’s Results sheet for audit purposes.

Existing Workers/Private Individuals

  • Existing Workers will require a company letter of endorsement confirming attendance of previous BT or instrument pipework training or copies of pertinent ECITB certificates (where applicable) and that the individual has workplace experience in the SBT subject area they are being tested in.
  • Existing Workers who attend one of the SBT training courses as “refresher training” must wait a minimum period of 4 weeks before being granted access to the relevant technical test. The Existing Workers will require a company letter of endorsement confirming attendance of the SBT training, copy of the ECITB certificate and that the individual has workplace experience in the SBT subject area they are being tested in.
  • Private individuals will be required to submit a detailed CV and copies of pertinent ECITB certificates (where applicable) to the Test Centre before the test session which will indicate that the individual has previous SBT or instrument pipework training or pertinent ECITB Endorsed Course attendance and has work place experience demonstrated in the CV on the SBT subject area to be tested in.

The Test Centre must advise candidates on the criteria not achieved and areas requiring further training, a minimum period of 4 weeks must lapse before the candidate can undertake a new testing session to allow for a period of training or practise.

Stage 4 (Onshore Test Centre) ECITB Technical Competence Assessment

To confirm the individual’s current skills, knowledge and ability the ECITB technical competence validation test is undertaken every 3 years to prove on-going performance development. If required the individual can undertake a short computer based training module to refresh their job knowledge before attempting the technical test.

The Test Centre must confirm the following information with the employer/candidate before arranging the test session:

  • Previous Certificate of Achievement – the Test Centre must carry out a check to confirm the certificate is genuine before arranging the test session.
  • Candidates with expired ECITB test certificates – the candidate will require a company letter of endorsement (LoE) confirming SBT activities are regularly carried out. Private individuals will be required to submit a detailed CV with two references regarding SBT activities carried out

Successful candidates achieve the certificate of achievement which is valid for a period of 3 years. Unsuccessful candidates must wait a minimum period of 4 weeks between the unsuccessful test session and next test session to allow a period of training to address any skills or knowledge gaps.

The Test Centre must advise unsuccessful candidates on the criteria not achieved and areas requiring further training, a minimum period of 4 weeks and maximum period of 3 months must lapse before the candidate can undertake a new testing session to allow for a period of training or practise

Each technical test consists of a knowledge and practical test. The knowledge test requires a minimum 80% pass rate and on successful completion of the knowledge test the candidate will proceed to a practical activity test against identified test criteria. The duration is between 1 and 3 hours to complete both elements.

Successful candidates will achieve ECITB certificate of achievement valid for 36 months.

An ECITB Technical Test provides a snapshot of an individual’s current ability – much like an MOT.  A test might be carried out for various reasons, such as a contractual requirement or in relation to a specific industry skills need (such as Mechanical Joint Integrity Offshore).  Technical Tests focus on related aspects of craft and technical disciplines and test both an individual’s knowledge of, and then their ability to perform, a specific industry task. Tests typically take one or two hours to complete, which means the same individual can take tests in several different skills in a day.

ECITB in conjunction with Step Change in Safety have agreed the model  below to be promoted to industry and delivered by the ECITB approved training providers and test centres.
